One of the great things about writing posts about recurring events like sports championships and religious holidays (for some people, I was just redundant) is that you can recycle them. I've written a number of posts on the religious holidays in the Church calendar. Today is Groundhog's Day in America, but it is also an important, but lately neglected religious feast called Candlemas. The two Holidays always fall on the same day. Last year I wrote a post explaining the significance of Candlemas. If you're new to Mazurland, in the spirit of Groundhog's Day (particularly of the movie of the same name, where the same day is replayed over and over again until true love breaks the spell), I direct you to that post.
Later, I'll hit the other upcoming religious holiday when I recycle last year's Superbowl Pool post with updated statistics and new analysis.
Update: Punxsutawney Phil did not see his shadow this morning. We're in for an early Spring!
Did you PhotoShop that picture just for this post?
Speaking of the movie "Grounhog Day", I really like it for some reason. I also read that many theology courses have discussed its meaning as it apllies to several religions, not just Christianity. For me, I just like Bill Murray.

No, I did not. I just did a Google image search on groundhog plus Candlemas and got that picture. It was associated with an article done for BBC online a couple of years ago.

Jonah Goldberg, one of my favorite writers at National Review, did a paean to the movie a couple of years ago:

WTF? I thought the grounhog ALWAYS sees his shadow.

PS The Goldberg article you linked to is the one I remember reading. It gave me a new appreciation for the film.

Yeah, It sure seems that way. But if you look at his history of prognostication, he doesn't always see it. I think his Phil's history of predictions are on groundhog.or, which is flooded right now, but you can check back later. I think he sees it much more often than not.

I just got Groundhog Day on DVD for Xmas. It's one of my favorite movies. I was CRUSHED when one of my customers from Punxsutawney told me it was mostly filmed IN ILLINOIS!
I like Bill Murray, but I've always been hot for Andie MacDowell. She's from near where I live (Gaffney, SC is about 30 miles away), and she lives in Asheville NC part time--the Artsy Fartsy artist enclave of my state. She's still a hottie.
If the sun's out at 7:15 AM, Phil sees his shadow. It was raining this AM up there, so he didn't.

BTW, Wanda and I have met Andie MacDowell in Asheville, just walking down the street. She was very sweet, and talked with us for a minute.
Speaking of Candlemas, Isn't Feb. also have the feast day of St Blaze-- when all us good Bead Jigglin, Mackerel Snappers went to church to get our throats blessed?

Yes, Hank, the feast of St. Blaise is tomorrow.
When you and Wanda met Andie MacDowell, how difficult was it for you to keep from drooling in front of your wife?
Posted by: Marty | February 02, 2007 at 11:00 AM
Ah, she knows--Wanda told her--My Husband just about worships you--and she just smiled and said he looks like a good guy. she's only 6 months younger than my wife--so she'll be 49 this year. Next time you see her on a L'oreal commerical, try and figure, even with a hollywood professional make up artist, how she can look that damn fine at her age!
