Here's a little roundup from 'round the blogosphere of the fall-out from Pope Benedict's recent remarks, in which he obliquely alluded to certain aspects of Islamic history. The Pope's (unintentionally) offensive remarks have touched off a new outpouring of rage by the RoP. (That's LGF-speak for "Religion of Peace"). Topping the list of reports, of course, are those from Little Green Footballs, which link you to other sources, including photos and video, from all over the world. For a good sample, go here, here, here, and here. There is much more. Just go to LGF and scroll down. My personal nominee for the best title (the one that says it all), is that of Jim Miller's post, "If You Don't Stop Calling Us Violent, We'll Kill You!" Miller's post has a great roundup of interesting facts from the career of Islam's founder and his early descendants. And Jimmy Akin has written several posts from the Catholic layman's perspective. Here and here should get you started.
I think the Pope knew what he was doing, and it wasn't mean-spirited. He was trying to open dialogue between Christians and Muslims (and maybe more importantly, amongst Muslims themselves) about the history of violence relating to religion. His apology afterward was a non-apology; "I'm sorry for the way you're reacting. Please re-read my speech". I like this Pope more and more over time...
As for the repercussions, which I think are just beginning:
1) Once again, it's interesting how we hear no statements from "moderate" Muslims. The radicals are burning churches, killing nuns, threatening the Pope'as life, threatening more strikes against the US (as if they're related) etc, etc. ,but no voice of restraint. Makes you wonder if the moderates exist.
2) Our friendly MSM painted the Pope's follow-up statement as an apology, which it really wasn't. By doing so, it makes it appear more like the pope did something wrong, which also makes it appear more like the radicals are somewhat justified in their reaction than they really are.
