HuffPo labels MOH Recipient "Chickenhawk"
I'm finding myself getting increasingly more angry at the idiots on the left with each passing day. Some of what I read and saw on TV yesterday just tore it out of the frame for me.
"Flashback to 2004"
John F Kerry (who spent 120 days in Vietnam) came to the Democratic Convention, saluted and said he was "Reporting for Duty". And of course, we were supposed to vote for John Kerry, who served in Vietnam, instead of George W Bush, who was in the military as an Air National Guard Pilot, but didn't go to Vietnam.
Back now to 2008.
In the usual Flip Flop that has become the hallmark of Democratic Politics, Democrats now say that serving in Vietnam---as Sen. McCain did, and being a prisoner in the Hanoi Hilton in Vietnam for over FIVE YEARS is not a reason to vote for him for President. In a full 180 turn, the Democrats say you should vote for the candidate (Barry Hussein Obama), who has NO military experience AT ALL.
Totally apart from the obvious hypocrisy of the Moonbat Left, Senator McCain has the friendship and support of George Everett "Bud" Day, who was a roomie of McCain's in the Hanoi Hilton. Bud will lead the charge against attacks on McCain's military record and service, and his military credentials to be Commander in Chief.
Unfortunately, Bud Day was a leader in what the loonie Left considers the Emmanuel Goldstein of Politics, the Swiftboat Veterans for Truth, who showed the world the sham that was John Kerry's 120 days in Vietnam. The REAL Swiftboat sailors, like one of my MCL associate members (a Navy SEAL who was a "River Rat" in Vietnam) can tell you that real Swiftboaters didn't have time to have someone take movies of them running around like John Wayne in a movie, shooting at imaginary VC/NVA.
Today, the Huffington Post writer Sam Stein labled Bud Day as a "Right Wing Extremist". Well, that's to be expected. And that doesn't tick me off like the commentors did. One, using the handle "bigdaddyvike" said this
Col. Bud Day is not just a Swiftboater- he is one of the architects and top chickenhawks behind the PNAC/neocon boys.
Well, that just freakin' TEARS IT. Remember what a "Chickenhawk" is---someone who is pro GWOT, but never served in the military--especially those who got deferments like Vice President Cheney.
Now, you can see Bud's wiki file HERE. But let me rant just a bit further and you won't have to look.
Bud Day was a Marine in WW2. As an Army Reservist after the war, He became a 2nd Lt in the Iowa Air National Guard in 1950, and was sent to Korea where he served two tours as a fighter/bomber pilot. Bud decided to make flying for the Air Force a career, even though his degree is a Juris Doctor, and could have flown a desk in a JAG office.
**Just to make sure you're keeping up, this means that Bud Day has served in the Marine Corps, the Army and the Air Force*** Such service does not a Chickenhawk make. But let's go on.
Ready to retire as a Major in the Air Force in one year, in 1967 he was made a Squadron Commander of "FAST FAC'S" (Forward Air Controllers) using the same F-100 Super Sabres that Bud had flown in Korea. (FAC duty is extremely hazardous, finding targets and advising pilots on their bomb/strafe runs by circling over the target)
Bud was shot down in August 1967 and spent 5 years and seven months as a North Vietnamese Prisoner, sharing a cell with John McCain. During his incarceration, he became the only NVA prisoner to escape and get back into South Vietnam, though he was re-captured and returned to Hanoi before reaching friendly forces.
** Again, not exactly the actions of a Chickenhawk**
Upon his return from Vietnam, President Ford awarded Bud Day the Congressional Medal of Honor for his actions while a prisoner in North Vietnam. (MOH's are awarded, not earned). In addition to the MOH, Bud has over 70 decorations, mostly for actions in combat. they include the following.
Bronze Star for Valor with two Oak Leaf Clusters this means 3 Bronze Stars awarded for valor in combat
Purple Heart with three Oak Leaf Clusters Survivor of 4 combat related injuries--not for getting rice stuck in one's behind from an errant flash-bang like Kerry's injuries were.
National Order of Vietnam --this is not a "Gimme" medal like the one above it given to everyone who served in country in Nam. In Fact, I never saw this one before.
For the rest of the story, see Bud's wiki file HERE. But this is the bottom line----
John F. Kerry--spent 120 days in Vietnam. Had friends take home movies of gundecked "heroism", and after completing 1/3 of a combat tour, came back to the USA and promptly shat on the heads of his brothers still in the field under fire to jump start a political career.
And the moonbats called him "REPORTING FOR DUTY" as a potential President of the United States
Bud Day--Served in WW2 with the Marines, Korea in the Army Air Guard, and the Air Force After Korea and in Vietnam. Awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor and over 70 more awards, mostly for heroism in aerial combat. Shot down performing one of the most hazardous jobs in Vietnam after already serving 19 years in the Armed Forces, and is held prisoner for over 5 years.
The moonbats call him a "Chickenhawk".
Time for Doc K's "RX for the aftermath of dealing with liberal moonbats" 1 Cold One--1 Rolled One. Repeat as many times as necessary.

FWIW--the MOH ribbon on this post is larger and fuzzy. I want it that way because it really shouldn't be copied. There's enough fools out there who try and pose as MOH recipients.

Blog readers don't always follow the links. In this case, Hank, I want to emphasize to our readers to make sure they follow your link to Bud Day's Wikipedia entry. Extraordinary. Awesome. Pretty much super human.

Bud Day is the antithesis of a chicken hawk. You would be hard pressed to find a more decorated veteran than Mr.Day. If Mr Day is not qualified to speak on national defense or matters concerning warin general than nobody is. I think the moonbat in question fails to understand what the definition of the word "chickenhawk" is.

Sean--Thanks for your comment. Sorry it got spam filtered by Type Pad.
At first we thought you might be the Sean Eagan we went to High School with, but one look at your picture on the website and I was sure you aren't him.
I served USN 12/75 to 6/84, including 3 years at the New London Submarine Base, and 2 years with Bravo Co 1/2, 2nd Marine Div--So I'm a Cold War Vet too, and will be looking at your site.

I don't mean to distract from your major point, but if you meant to imply that Bud Day flew the F-100 on COMBAT tours in Korea, you are in error. --- it was not in existence when the Korean War was being fought. His combat tours were probably in F-86 Sabre Jets, an earlier aircraft. The F-100 Super Sabre (or "Hun" in the Air Force) was the first combat aircraft capable of supersonic speeds in level flight. He may well have flown the F-100 in Korea, just not on combat tours. None of this, of course, is meant to distract from Bud Day's very real accomplishments, nor from your major, legitmate, gripes with Lefties.

Nice post. One minor point, however: 'The medal is frequently, albeit incorrectly, called the Congressional Medal of Honor, stemming from its award by the Department of Defense "in the name of Congress."' (from Wikipedia)

Sacha--Glad my post moved you to comment.
It's known as the CMH to everyone connected with the Military, and is accepted just as the Commanding officer of any unit is referred to as "The Old Man"---even if it's a woman, regardless of age.
Ex: JFK was "The Old Man" on PT 109 even though he was in his mid 20's at the time.
To be in the presence of these men is an experience you won't forget soon afterwards. I've been fortunate enough to have met 4 MOH recipients in the last 2 years, and also met the parents of LCPL Jason Dunham of Scio, NY; who received their son's CMH from President Bush not long after he died in Iraq.
Jason laid down on a grenade that HE could have avoided the blast from, but would have killed 5 of the Marines in his squad. He gave his life so they could keep theirs, and did it without hesitation.
In the Marines we call that the results of "GOOD TRAINING", as he did what Marines are expected to do. But when I met the Dunham's, one of the things I said to them was "We still have a country that produces men like Jason, who without hesitation laid down his life for his comrades in arms, and that is an amazing thing to contemplate".
I also met Lt. Gen Livingston (USMC/RET) who was awarded the CMH for actions in Vietnam as a captain leading a company of less than 100 Marines in an engagement against a battalion of NVA. When I was introduced as a Corpsman, he brightened up and said
"I never pass a Corpsman without showing him how happy I am they saved my life in Vietnam".
And it was a near thing, as he refused to be evacuated from the field until the engagement ended and he was finished directing his troops while suffering from multiple wounds.
To hear the motivational talks that many of these men give will inspire you.
